The Hessian grand ducal family had more than their share of sorrow. Six weeks after this photograph was taken Ernie’s daughter by his first wife died of typhoid aged 8. Within weeks of his own death in 1937 his widow, elder son, daughter-in-law (a sister of Prince Philip) and their two little boys were killed in an air crash; the small daughter, left at home, died two years later. Nicholas and Alexandra were murdered with their five children in 1918; Irene and Henry lost two sons to haemophilia; both Ella (1918) and Serge (1905) were assassinated, and athough both Victoria and Louis died from natural causes, their younger son, Earl Mountbatten, was assassinated in 1979.
